Travel to Réunion

Réunion Island, situated some 200 km from the coast of Mauritius, is one of the most spectacular islands of the Indian Ocean. The volcanic island hosts one of the world’s most active volcanoes, le Piton de la Fournaise, and has three major cirques: Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos.

The spectacular Piton de la Fournaise is one of Réunion’s  major attractions, towering 2,611 metres above sea level. The walk to the volcanoes peak takes about five hours and it is advisable to find out in advance about weather conditions as cloud cover can make it difficult for hikers to make the climb.

Saint Paul, the former capital of Réunion, is the nearest town to the volcano and is a nice place to relax after a challenging hike.

The town has a 3km stretch of black-sand beaches that offer excellent Réunion holidays and vacations.

A few miles away from Saint Paul, on the north western side of Réunion, is Saint-Gilles-Les-Bains — a very popular destination, offering a 20km lagoon and pristine white, sandy beaches. Saint-Gilles has evolved from a laid back fishing village to the island’s most popular resort. Water sports such as diving, snorkeling and swimming are a must, and so is a tour to the spectacular botanical garden that boasts about 700 species of tropical plants.

Saint Denis, the small but lively capital of Réunion, is well worth a visit. The town has a wide range of from its Cathedral, Buddhist temples, mosques to Tamil, which demonstrates the diversity of the island.

Major attractions here include Musée Léon Dierx, an fascinating collection of Modern Arts, and the Natural History Museum that opened its doors in 1855 thereby becoming the first of its kind in the Indian Ocean. The city is close to Roland Garros airport, the main airport on the island of Réunion.

When To Go
Réunion experiences only two distinct seasons: the hot, rainy summer from December to April and the cool, dry winter from late April to October.

The east coast is significantly wetter than the west, the wettest of all being the mountains above the east coast – around Plaine-des-Palmistes, Takamaka and the northern and eastern slopes of the volcano. Temperatures on the coast average 22°C and  27°C in winter and summer respectively.

From late June to early September Réunion experiences the peak tourist seasons. The period between October and the New Year holidays is also quite busy, but everything eases down between February and March, the cyclone-prone period. The drier winter months are the most favourable for hiking.
