Ziwa Rhinos in Uganda

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary of Uganda is a nonprofit animal sanctuary. It is located around 109 miles or 176 Km towards the north of the capital and is the biggest city of the country of Uganda, Kampala.  To be more precise, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is situated in the Nakasongola District on the river basin of the Kafu River.

If you go by road, you will find the sanctuary located across the Kampala-Gulu highway. For people visiting the place from a foreign land, knowing the exact coordinates of the place will make reaching the sanctuary easier; it has the Latitude of : 1.5000 and the longitude: 32.1000. These coordinates are only the approximate values as till date the direction of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not included in majority of the maps available for public use.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is run together by an NGO called Uganda Rhino Fund and Uganda Wildlife Authority. The Uganda Rhino Fund was established with the aim of restoring the rhinoceros population of Uganda.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary serves as a protected place for the rhino population of the country; here breeding of rhinos occur and these newly bred animals are protected from non human and human predators. After some time i.e. when the rhinos become mature enough they are sent to different national parks of Uganda. The public gets to witness these animals once they reach the national parks.

You can go rhino tracking in Uganda, an adventure that will not leave you the same. On a guided walk through the bushy land, you will meet the rhinos and get to learn about the great job of breeding the rhinos in a bid to restore the population in the country where they had gone extinct. The last rhinos were last seen in the 1970s and used to thrive in several national parks and game reserves.

Let us now get acquainted with the facilities available at this national park. There’s a restaurant, a guest house, tour guides and camp grounds. The rhinos are guarded by a team comprising of almost 50 security guards and park rangers all through the day. The total land area covered by the sanctuary is 70 sq km and it has electric fencing all around it for keeping the rhinos protected from ill motive of intruders.
