Savuti Channel Flows again!

8 03 2010

Savuti FlowThe Savuti Channel is flowing past Savuti Elephant Camp in Botswana again after 27 years of being ‘lost’. Covering over 100 km, it flows from the Linyanti River (fed from the Zibadianja Lagoon) through a gap in the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge, past Savute Elephant Camp. The channel is flowing towards its final destination, the Savuti Marsh!!! See the image – the dark green lines show the water flow…

Yes it was a great site to see. Wayne and myself were up there last month and it was good to see the river running for the first time in 27 years. Thats longer that what Jenman Safaris has been around for. Lets hope it keeps on running for a few years.

it is un believable but yet happening, the river has been dry longer than i was born and i thought it would never flow again bacause what we knew were just old stories about our grandparents living along the evergreen place which we grew seing as a desert. i hope the ecosystem will build its self again.

What a great piece of uplifting news among all the doom and gloom portrayed by the catastrophic climate change people. Was there a specific reason for the river drying up because of ecosystem destruction, or was it extended poor rainfall? In any case, it is awesome to behold the satellite pictrures, they really tell the story!
