Hazel Walker shares her emotional experience of taking part in the South Africa trek to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care
Imagine this – you’ve spent a week bonding with 37 total strangers, trekking over sand dunes and beaches, rainforest and veldt, hills and mountains. You’ve discovered South Africa in all its glory – whales leaping like dolphins in a slate grey ocean at Walkers Bay, penguins who ought, surely, to be skating on thin ice somewhere other than Betty’s Bay, and an ostrich in De Hoop national park who inspected your group with contemptuous curiosity.

Week 2 (15th – 21st of February 2010)
Welcome to my second working week here with Jenman African Safaris in Cape Town. I would like to thank you all for your comments and wishes and I am really glad that you liked it.
You probably read Katja’s comment on my first week, for those who didn’t:
…Excited to read more about your stay here and don’t be shy! I am sure a lot of other people would really like to know how it is ‘behind’ the scenes at Jenman Safaris…
Since Katja is my boss I probably should fulfil her wish and tell you what it’s really like to work with Jenman Safaris…

Over the past ten years tourism to Zimbabwe has been limited to the Victoria Falls, which has had to market itself as a tourism oasis within a desert. The word Zimbabwe has been demonized by the international media – mention the name of the country in Europe and images of farm invasions, hyperinflation, cholera, and political violence spring to mind. That such a beautiful country’s reputation is so tarnished makes the job for us Zimbabwe afi-cionados extremely difficult, even if we know that the reality is a far cry from the image presented in the media.

My blog is about my experiences in Cape Town as well as those as an intern with Jenman African Safaris. In my weekly blog you can follow how I explore Cape Town and you can also have an insight on what is happening here at Jenman Safaris!
To give you an idea of what I am like, I will introduce myself in a few words:

I am now spending my forth semester here in Cape Town as a marketing intern at Jenman African Safaris. I started my internship on the 1st of February, and this blog ‘Tobias from Germany’ is my new project.

I know, I know – Valentines Day 2009 is long overdue and my dear web editor has been the most patient person, carefully reminding me daily that I owe her a blog about my ‘secret’ romantic getaway – so here is to all of you who want to surprise their better halves with something special!
Just before New Years’ I received a call from my better half asking me to please take leave on the 13th February 2009. I wasn’t allowed to ask questions …

A cheetah in the Matusadona (left) – where there were none before. This cheetah pictured on its impala kill by lucky photographer, Derek Smith, in December 2009, is a descendant of a small population of 14 of these lovely animals re-introduced into the Matusadona National Park in the1990s by conservation organization, The Zambezi Society.

Hello Andree,
I would like to use this way to thank you (again) personally for all your work you did for us on safari – you are a pleasant and humorous guide with great driving and cooking skills! You gave us great information about the country, people, flora and fauna & taught us about the social structures of the places we visited. That was a definite highlight….

Zimbabwe is a beautiful area encircled by controversy and political instability… yet those that have been there say is nothing like that at all! So what is the truth? The only way to find out the objective truth about Zimbabwe is to ask some tough questions to those that have recently returned from Zimbabwe. This is part one… Watch the blog over the next few weeks and months to read more questions and answers. Answers provided by Garth Jenman, managing director of Jenman Safaris… Garth was in Zimbabwe on a fact finding trip late last year.
