After my 2-week journey through Zambia, Botswana and Namibia I could eliminate the last doubt I had… even insulin-dependent diabetics can travel in the African Bush – and enjoy the pure wilderness!!
Marion, a German nurse for diabetes was shocked when she found out: “I would never let my patients do something like that!” she proclaimed! However Brigitte, a Austrian pharmacist, at least knew about this and defended it by saying: “Yes, I’ve heard of this before, diabetics have gone on well-organised hikes up Mount Everest… so why not Africa?” My journey through Africa has proved Marion wrong – diabetics can do anything they want even African Safaris, as long as they go on a well-organised trip with the right precautions…

My Educational adventure began early December – where I got to go to Livingstone, Chobe and Victoria Fall! I looked at 30 properties, crossed the borders 5 times in 5 days, went on an Elephant-back Safari, enjoyed a sunset cruise and more…
Thursday, 06 Dec 07: Bernelle and I departed Cape Town on the evening of 6th Dec for Johannesburg, where we spent the night at the Airport Game Lodge, which is the departure point for our World in One Country Safari. We found the accommodation to be basic, but very clean and comfortable.

This is the fourth largest island in the world (after Greenland, Papua New Guinea and Borneo for those quiz fans amongst us) and truly is a unique destination. While it is only 250 miles from the coast of Africa but might as well be ten times that distance if you are looking for comparisons.
Madagascar has some of the highest endemicity on the planet with nearly 80% of its flora and fauna being endemic. There are 30 species of lemurs that are only found on the island and another 100 mammals that are endemic to Madagascar.

We arrived in Namibia on a scorching hot day at Hosea Kutako Airport, Windhoek. I had been unsure of what to expect as I knew very little about Namibia, other than it is famed for its red sand dunes… but I was soon to learn that Namibia has so much more to offer then the dunes!

On arrival we were met by our guide and driver who took us on a very brief tour of Windhoek…We then began our long trek down south to the Kalahari region – after this long drive, it was such a relief to arrive at this Bagatelle Kalahari Ranch ‘oasis’ where we were greeted with ice cold beverages! Nothing better then an ice cold drink after a long hot drive!

On Wednesday I returned from Botswana and still I am filled with the impressions gained during the trip. The beauty of the diverse landscapes, our experiences in general and the inner peace this country has conveyed are overwhelming! It appears that it is merely my body sitting in front of the computer, while my soul still wanders in Africa!
As you will gather, I enjoyed it immensely and again would like to express my thanks for this trip!

Jenman Safaris offers a very good product which absolutely matches its price-tag and the form of travel, which is a little different to the norm, comes with its very own appeal. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea to be unable to dine at a restaurant, to camp and to assist with kitchen-work, but those clients that let themselves in for it, are rewarded with a very special group experience and much more intense tour-impressions.

A Jenman African Safaris’ employee Debbie braved the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro, situated in the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro, a now-dormant volcano, rises to 5895 metres and is both the highest point in Africa and one of the highest mountains in the world.

The climb takes six days and the routes can vary, according to your preference. Debbie says that one should be careful which route one chooses, as each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Read the rest of this entry »
